The Pros and Cons to Renewable Energy

on Sunday, April 11, 2010

When people think of renewable energy sources they think of something that is 100% good for the environment. This however is not always the case. David Craddock dedicated a chapter in his book (Renewable Energy Made Easy: Free Energy From Solar, Wind, Hydro power, and Other Alternative Energy Sources). to the topic. In the chapter, Renewable Energy: the Pros and Cons, Craddock informs the readers that there are indeed some negative effects of the renewable energy sources we think so highly of. A big part of his argument is the price. The price of using renewable energy is extremely expensive because it is so new. Solar power panels and wind towers are not investments that the everyday person can afford. What could we do about this? Is there a future for these resources if the general public has little access to it? Another big misconception is that renewable energy sources are pollution free. This is far from true! Noise pollution is a huge problem from wind power. The wind turbans cause a lot of loud noise, and it can be very disturbing to humans and wildlife in the surrounding areas. Also most people believe that renewable energy sources are better for the environment. I however must disagree with this point. In the process of making space for the technology needed for the energy sources there are major damages done to the environment. Habitats are destroyed, and all this for use to come up with a "better" energy source. Is it really worth it?

Shereen, I agree the startup cost of the windmills are ridiculous and it takes years for them to start paying for themselves. Many people view them as eyesores, but I personally think that they may add to the scenery even if they do turn out to be nuisances. So they cost a lot and they are not very productive, but they look nice.
