Solar Power! Say What?

on Friday, March 26, 2010

Alternative energy sources are increasing in popularity and becoming easier for consumers to use. Sources like wind, water, and solar power all bring many benefits to the enviroment. Clean air, and the simple fact that they are renewable should be pushing our government to look into these sources. The issue is that you, the public, are not informed about what these alternative sources really are.
Solar power is the one i feel that people tend to know the least about. Journal articles, like Solar Radiation, take the time to inform the public of what solar power really is. The most important aspect of solar power is the photovoltaic cell; which gather energy from the Sun and convert it into electricity. The effectiveness of this process varies based to factors such as latitude and cloud coverage, however it still remains a great option for a vast percentage of the country.
Students, like myself see this technology as a positive step toward energy solutions in this country;however, some do not fully understand how such devices benefit consumers. I feel like the government should be taking more steps to informing the general public as to what solar power energy is, and better inform them about how they can get involved with the new technology.

I completely agree that solar power is an incredible alternative energy source. But I have to ask about the cost. Now eventually in the long run any renewable resource would pay for itself, but besides the government, who could afford it? Especially with the economy in the shape that it is in right now. Of course the first action would naturally be to have the government support it first and then have the rest of society fall in line. But if any passionate individual wanted to become personally involved, what would the ultimate financial benefits be? Would there still be energy bills to pay in order to power the solar panel? These might be stupid questions, but as a consumer these are all questions about renewable resources I don't know and I would want to have answered before I invested any of my money into something that "life-changing."
